Education Programming

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum (SSHFM) is pleased to announce that SaskEnergy has re-committed to being the presenting sponsor for the 2008 education program.  This marks the fourth consecutive year that SaskEnergy has sponsored the SSHFM's entire education program.  The SSHFM Board and staff extend their thanks to SaskEnergy for the renewed education commitment and look forward to another strong year of in-house and outreach education programming made possible through this financial support.

Understanding Heroes - NEW Grade 4 Curriculum Based Program
Since its establishment in 1966, the SSHFM has inducted over 300 outstanding individuals within its "athlete" and "builder" categories, as well as over 100 teams.  The contributions made by these individuals and teams, not only towards sport, but also towards the overall cultural fabric of this province, in many respects make these inductees true Saskatchewan "heroes".

In conjunction with Saskatchewan Learning and its Social Studies grade four curriculum on Saskatchewan Heroes, the SSHFM has established a two-part program called Understanding Heroes that would introduce, share and discuss some of the important elements behind the entire "Heroes" concept, including the role and context of the provincial sports hero.

Program particulars include:
PART ONE:

  • An educational class tour of the SSHFM
  • Discussion of selected individual inductees (past and present), and their incredible accomplishments
  • Informal discussion with students on the concept of "Heroes"

Planning For Part Two

  • Ask students/teachers to consider establishing their own Hall of Fame.  How would you nominate and select your heroes?  What criteria would you use?
  • Each student could choose the name of one hero to present or to discuss during Part Two of the program.

PART TWO

  • The Education Coordinator visits your class to talk about your own Heroes or Hall of Fame projects.
  • Did your class construct its own Hall of Fame?  An opportunity for students to present their own heroes.  May involve short written citations, photos, etc. for each hero.
  • Class discussion on process of selecting heroes.  Look at the variety and quality of these individuals!
Adults and Elders
  • We offer guided tours throughout the year for groups that express interest.
  • We have programs of interest to adult and elder groups.
Outreach Program
  • We have developed the following programs that go out into the community for presentations at schools, clubs, churches, outreach program.
  • Women in Sports
  • Prejudice in Sports
  • The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum's Sport History Project
  • History of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum
  • Saskatchewan Sports in 1905
  • Saskatchewan at the Olympic Games
  • Football by its Original Rules, a video presentation

Partner In Education
  • We are continuing to celebrate our partnership with McLurg School that began in 2002.  Some of the activities that our student leaders from grade 6 to 8 are involved in with us include regular events like the Candy Cane Caper that we celebrate with the McLurg community each December, and the Ice and Fire Festival organized by Downtown Regina.  Our student leaders also help with an assortment of education tours, media conferences, the Induction Dinner, and - on occasion - the striking or installing of exhibits.

In the fall, the students help us with our annual “Hall of Fame” Football Game between the University of Regina Rams and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies when the game is played in Regina.  McLurg students were involved in a half-time touch football game at the 2006 game.

Spring is the busiest time for our school partners.  The leaders assist the program coordinator with school tours at the SSHFM.  As well, the school and the SSHFM put together a "Canada Day" full of festivities and cake as the school approaches the last day of school.

The SSHFM and McLurg School are constantly looking for new ways to enjoy this partnership.
